The Elder’s Manifesto

Besides exuding a vampire-like feeling (Elder just strikes me as a Vampire Elder, one of the three original Vampires: Marcus, Viktor, and Amelia), the man of the hour is Alexander Elder, a professional stock trader. Elder was born in Leningrad and grew up in Estonia, where he entered medical school at the age of 16. At 23, while working as a ship’s doctor, he jumped a Soviet Union ship in Africa and received political asylum in the United States. Or so his public profile often goes.

The Economic Truth

Many people, I presume, occasionally vow to learn something new, only to find themselves beaten down a couple of months later. This enthusiasm sometimes coincides with yearly resolution setting.

Summing it all up two-zero-one-two

I wasn’t a big fan of creating new year resolutions until I read back what I wrote in 2010. It was an extremely difficult exercise to complete let alone to craft the first sentence. But I guess it’s worth the effort after all.

I reproduce the structure below and please grab a pen and a paper (preferably a book) for the following – there’s nothing to lose except for a couple of hours.

Show me the money

Academic definition:

A capital market is a market for securities (debt or equity), where business enterprises (companies) and governments can raise long-term funds. In primary markets, new stock or bond issues are sold to investors via a mechanism known as underwriting. In the secondary markets, existing securities are sold and bought among investors or traders, usually on a securities exchange, over-the-counter, or elsewhere. [source Wikipedia].

Of Parallel Worlds and Circular Reasoning

Haven’t been blogging for some time now. Not sure if it matters. It’s not my fault because I failed miserably in my attempt to crack the codes of I Ching or better known as Book of Changes. It’s too difficult a text to understand.

Confucius said, “If I could add fifty more years to my life, I would spend them studying the I Ching. Then, I would not have any major faults.” Unless I am very much mistaken, that quote came from him when Confucius was about 70 years old. I am told that I Ching must be taught and couldn’t be learnt. You need a teacher. Hopefully I could find myself a teacher soon.

Microtrends – unnoticeable trends that have noticeable effects

Both chaos theory or commonly referred to as the butterfly effect and microtrends share one obvious similarity: that an initial small change can turn into a sweeping current of change.

3 surefire ways to be rich

Of the countless books on the topic including tactical suggestion of putting a date of purchase and a date of completion on your toothpaste (of so-called expenditure control), I think George Samuel Clason summarized it best in his bestseller book, The Richest Man in Babylon:

First lesson in aikido

Aikido, as we know it, is a defensive martial art (vs offensive martial arts like Muay Thai, fondly known as ‘the science of eight limbs’.) The founder, by the way is Morihei Ueshiba or known as O Sensei (which can be loosely translated to mean the great teacher). In honour of the teacher, a picture of O Sensei is usually placed in the dojo (i.e. training place) where students of aikido gather to train.

Who are James Wilson and George Kelling?

Consider a building with a few broken windows. If the windows are not repaired, the tendency is for vandals to break a few more windows. Eventually, they may even break into the building, and if it’s unoccupied, perhaps become squatters or light fires inside.

What can we learn from Jack Welch?

Jack Welch of General Electric (GE) fame taught us 6 principles in life:
