The Conscious Competence Theory

March 17th, 2011 by dimpledbrain

The 4 stages of learning are:

  1. Unconscious incompetence – totally unknown to us. Blind spot. E.g. I don’t know Spanish existed
  2. Conscious incompetence – recognition of gap e.g. I know about Spanish but I couldn’t speak Spanish
  3. Unconscious competence – bridged gap e.g. I can speak Spanish fairly well but I couldn’t teach it to someone else
  4. Conscious competence – mastered skill e.g. I can teach Spanish/ a skill that has become second nature

For us to learn something, it is important to first recognize the gap or deficit failing which it will always be a blind spot to us

Reflection: what are some of our conscious competence (known strengths), unconscious competence (unknown strengths), conscious incompetence (known weaknesses) and theoretically unconscious incompetence (unknown weaknesses)?
